Final thoughts on the World Cup

OK, I admit, I tried to watch the final minutes of the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands.

The two TV choices I had were the World Cup or Bonanza reruns on TVLand. Since I’m a sports editor, who needs to be up to snuff on important world sporting events, I opted for the World Cup. And besides, the Bonanza episode wasn’t one of my favorites.

I tuned in the game with about 30-35 minutes left in regulation. If you were watching you know it was another hour or so before I saw a ball find the net as Spain took the 1-0 overtime win.

Maybe it was the fried pork chops, corn on the cob and baked apples I had for lunch, or maybe it was the soccer, but I couldn’t keep myself from dozing off no matter how hard I tried to focus on the 46-inch high definition screen of my TV.

There were a couple of break away attempts for goals, and a couple of other shots on goal, but I never really got the feeling that something special was about to happen. One might be attributed my lack of anticipation of for the big play to my soccer limited soccer background.

Shortly after the World Cup ended, I was channel surfing and ran across the Futures Game, which pitted minor league baseball players born in the United States against minor leaguers born in other countries.

The USA won the game 9-1. And although I have only heard of a few of the players in the game, I was quickly drawn to the action of the diamond.

The future Major League players showed their stuff with great pitching, hitting, base running and defense. It might have only been a minor league baseball all-star game, but I found myself caught up in the action the way World Cup fans are drawn to soccer.

It is the individual tastes and preferences of sports fans around the globe that gives each of us something to cheer about.
